Myanmar Courier, Express and Parcel Market

Myanmar Express Logistics Market Overview and Size

Myanmar’s economy opened up in 2011 following the democratic elections and since then foreign investment has been steadily flowing in, reaching USD 7.5 billion in 2018. One of the lucrative factors for investing in Myanmar is the abundant supply of natural resources and one of the cheapest labor costs in Asia. However there has been underinvestment in Myanmar with respect to the transportation sector, with merely 5% of government expenditure going towards the Transport and Communications sector even though Transportation services contribute 11.2% to the GDP. Myanmar ranked 126th out of 170 countries in the 2016 Integrated Index for Postal Development.

Myanmar Express Logistic Market Segmentation

Revenue by Type of Service: Express cargo dominated the market in term of revenue, mainly due to prosperous Manufacturing Sector and increasing volume of foreign trade, FMCG and Retail Sector. E-Commerce Parcels are also a leading source of revenue even though e-commerce properly began only about 3 years ago in Myanmar. The E-Commerce market size is around USD 6 million and at present, there are estimated to be 220,000 active online buyers in Myanmar.

Number of Shipments by Domestic and International Shipments:
Majority of mails, documents and e-commerce parcels are domestic. Mainly e-commerce parcels, the transit time is very high for international shipments so that they are hardly delivered within 7 days. Although international e-commerce parcels take 3-5 weeks for delivery, local orders are delivered in 3-4 days. Due to the same challenge, expressly delivered cargo is mostly domestic. Air Freight volume in Myanmar was extremely low in 2017. Cold Transportation, however, is majorly for international delivery. Agricultural products and seafood are among the major exports of Myanmar.

Number of Shipments by Air and Road Express:
E-Commerce Parcels are majorly delivered through road express since domestic orders are more than international orders. Cross border e-commerce is still at infancy stage due to strict regulations. Mails and documents are majorly domestic but there are a lot of shipments accruing to foreign trade such as invoice, airway bill, seaway bill, bill of lading among others. Express cargo is majorly sent through air and constitutes a lesser share because air freight is expensive and not the major mode of transport in Myanmar. It is more often used for cold transportation.

Competitive Scenario

The Express Logistics market in Myanmar is at the nascent growth stage. DHL is the leading international player due to reliability and guarantee of delivery, whereas Royal Express is the leading domestic player. Since EMS is a subsidiary of Myanmar Post, it has the widest network of post offices and address database. Due to this reason delivery in rural areas is done mainly through EMS. While the major e-commerce players have logistics partners, the local merchants deliver their packages through unlicensed small delivery service providers or express buses that do not provide guarantee of delivery. This situation is expected to change with the privatization of Myanmar Post and development of postal services.

Future Outlook and Projections

The government has announced around 150 designated planned transport projects for road, rail, sea and air transport facilities. They are drafting new sets of laws pertaining to telecommunications, e-commerce and cyber security, expected to be aligned with the recent ASEAN E-Commerce Agreement signed in November 2018. The agreement is aimed at facilitating cross border e-commerce transactions. Total cargo volume in 2030 is projected to cross 300 million tons and trade cargo to increase at ~ 3%. The thriving F&B industry in Myanmar will be the leading growth factor for growth of cold chain in the country by 2030, accounting to roughly about 35% of household expenditure. Major corporations, especially consumer goods manufacturers, from the US, Europe as well as Asia have announced their intention to return to Myanmar or, to invest for the first time. All these developments, backed by foreign investment and booming e-commerce sector, are bound to increase the future market size of Express Logistics at a double digit CAGR.
