Deep Dive: Power Distribution
Summary
The electricity distribution network is expanding globally in terms of line length and capacity. Much of this increase between 2007 and 2017 has come from developed countries such as the US, Russia, and Japan. Frontrunners in the developing world such as Brazil, and India have also largely contributed.
This growth is not restricted simply to larger swathes of territories being covered by the utilities, but is also evident in terms of technological innovation. And it seems, in the latter, there is a clear divide between the efforts of utilities serving communities in developed countries and developing countries.
In the former, investment by utilities is directed towards adopting cutting edge technology for providing value added service to customers. In fact utilities are changing their business models from being simply suppliers of electricity, to service providers. They are customizing their services to the lifestyle of individual customers and are including technologies such as smart meters and internet-of-things to do so. Use of remote sensors, drones, and palm-held devices by field staff is also being increasingly adopted by these utilities to prevent supply outages.
On the other hand, utilities in developing countries are more focused on increasing grid access as much of the population residing in remote villages and in some cases, even in urban pockets, does not have the benefit of basic electricity usage.
These utilities have future plans to invest in smart technology and in some cases have carried out pilot projects. In the future, they will have much to learn from the experience of the utilities of the developed world, when they roll out smart technology on a massive community-wide scale.
